Article I - Of The Scriptures (Bibliology)
We believe that the Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired, and
is a perfect treasure of heavenly instruction; that it has God for its author,
salvation for its end, and truth without any mixture of error for its matter;
that it reveals the principles by which God will judge us; and therefore is, and
shall remain to the end of the world, the true center of Christian union, and
the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds and opinions should be
tried.

- THE NAME "SCRIPTURES"
- The word Scriptures is from the Latin word scribo which means "I
write."
- God's planned and revealed collection of Sacred Scripture is called the
Bible.
- The Greek word BIBLION means "little book." This would refer
to one book of the Bible.
- The Greek word BIBLIA means "little books."
- Our Bible is made up of sixty-six (66) little books.
- THE NEED OF THE SCRIPTURES
- The necessity of the Scriptures is based upon the existence of God
- God has an interest in men, thus the Bible was revealed unto us.
- Man needs to know about God, so God revealed what he wants us to know
about him through the Scriptures.
- The necessity of the Scriptures is based upon man's need to know about
himself
- No human knowledge can get to the root of man's being and his problem
with sin. These things are spiritually discerned - 1 Corinthians 2:14
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for
they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know [them], because they
are spiritually discerned.
- Man can learn many things by experience and study
- But man cannot know about God nor the truth about himself without a
revelation from God
- We could not know of his purpose and grace, redemption, blessings,
promises, etc.
- God uses object lessons to teach men about himself and about man.
- Psalm 19:1-6 is a personification of the heavens and the firmament
- Romans 1:18-20 is an object lesson for us to know more about God
- The necessity of Scriptures is based upon the idea that man needs to
know more than object lessons can teach us
- In the Scriptures, God tells of things that man cannot know of his own
experiences or through study.
- Man needs to know of his sinful state. He needs to know of God's
saving grace. He needs to know about Jesus who died, was buried and
resurrected. Man cannot learn this on his own.
- Man cannot know about certain spiritual dangers and about promises
that God has given, including his promise of an eternal inheritance.
- The necessity of Scriptures is based upon the idea that man has needed
this revelation from the beginning.
- God's word was settled in heaven - Psalms 119:89 For ever, O LORD, thy
word is settled in heaven.
- Then God revealed his word to man a little at a time, from generation
to generation until the word of God was complete.
- From promises to prophecies to the complete collection of sacred
Scriptures, God revealed himself and his will to us.
- Notice 1 Corinthians 13:10 But when that which is perfect is come,
then that which is in part shall be done away. See also verses 11-12.
- THE NOTATION OF THE SCRIPTURES
- The Men Selected
- 2 Peter 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man:
but holy men of God spake [as they were] moved by the Holy Ghost.
- These were "holy" men, men of character and a deep love for
God
- Whatever the need for a certain generation, God chose the men for the
job.
- The Method Selected
- 2 Peter 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man:
but holy men of God spake [as they were] moved by the Holy Ghost.
- The method was not left to man, for man would certainly not condemn
himself to total depravity; but God led these men by his own Holy
Spirit.
- THE NURTURE OF THE SCRIPTURES
- The Bible nurtures man in his need for eternal life
- John 3:16
- This eternal life begins at the moment of faith in Christ - 1 John 3:2
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear
what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we
shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
- The Bible nurtures man in his need for human truth
- The Bible is not a science book; but when the Bible speaks of science,
it is perfectly truthful.
- The Bible is also true when it speaks concerning history, poetry, etc.
- But the Bible speaks main of redemption, and\ in that it is also
truthful.
- The Bible nurtures man in its perspective of Jesus Christ
- God's greatest revelation to man was the incarnation of Jesus Christ.
- Everyone who wrote scripture before his coming prophesied of his
coming.
- Everyone who wrote scripture after his coming looked back to Jesus
Christ.
- The prophecies that complete the scriptures are true and final.
- There is no more revelation that we need about Jesus Christ.
- The word of God is sufficient.
