New Hampshire Confession of Faith #5

Pastor Ronnie Wolfe

V. OF JUSTIFICATION (Dikaiosis)

We believe that the great gospel blessing which Christ secures to such as believe in Him is Justification; that Justification includes the pardon of sin, and the promise of eternal life on principles of righteousness; that it is bestowed, not in consideration of any works of righteousness which we have done, but solely through faith in the Redeemers blood; by virtue of which faith his perfect righteousness is freely imputed to us of God; that it brings us into a state of most blessed peace and favor with God, and secures every other blessing needful for time and eternity.

Definition of Justification

"Also called justification by faith. Theol. the act of God whereby humankind is made or accounted just, or free from guilt or penalty of sin." (Random House Unabridged Dictionary, Electronic Version).

  1. WHAT DOES JUSTIFICATION INCLUDE?
    1. Pardon
      1. a release from the penalty of an offense; a remission of penalty, as by a governor.
      2. Jesus sets us free from our penalty of sin.
      3. Justification includes forgiveness.
    2. Assurance Of Eternal Happiness With Christ
      1. Justification makes the believer just as if he has never sinned.
      2. The only way we can inherit eternal life in Heaven is by having no guilt. Justification erases all guilt of sin.

  2. WHAT IS THE BASIS OF JUSTIFICATION?
    1. The First Basis of Justification Is Righteousness
      1. Righteousness is a Divine attribute and includes the wisdom and justice of God.
      2. In righteousness (thus justification), God's justice is satisfied
      3. This was purchased on the cross by Jesus Christ
    2. The Second Basis of Justification Is Faith
      1. Jesus Christ is the object of our faith - Romans 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
      2. Acts 16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
      3. The redemption of Christ is appropriated by faith; this is justification.
    3. The Third Basis of Justification Is Communion With God
      1. Our justification makes it possible for us to commune with God
      2. Faith links the soul with God and gives assurance of salvation - Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

  3. WHAT ARE THE BLESSINGS OF JUSTIFICATION?
    1. A Divine Consciousness
      1. This brings peace to our souls - Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
      2. Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
      3. We have no fear of the law or of sin - 1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
    2. A Hope For The Future
      1. 2 Corinthians 7:5 For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without [were] fightings, within [were] fears.
      2. 2 Corinthians 4:8 [We are] troubled on every side, yet not distressed; [we are] perplexed, but not in despair;2 Corinthians 4:9 Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;

  4. SEVEN WAYS OF JUSTIFICATION
    1. By God The Father - Romans 8:33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? [It is] God that justifieth.
    2. By Grace - Romans 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
    3. By Christ's Blood - Romans 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
    4. By Resurrection of Christ - Romans 4:25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.
    5. By Faith - Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
    6. By Our Words - Matthew 12:37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. This is after we are saved.
    7. By Our Works - James 2:24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. This is for the saved person. He is justified in doing good works, because the works are done through the Holy Spirit.
