Christology #4
The Humanity of Jesus Christ
Oct. 2, 2005 (PM) - Pastor Ronnie Wolfe

Ga 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,

Words to Recognize

Docetism B the belief that Jesus did not have a physical body; rather, that his body was an illusion, as was his crucifixion.

Introduction

J. C. Philpot said, Right views concerning Christ are indispensable to a right faith, and a right faith is indispensable to salvation.

This is so true, because our religion is called Christianity because it rests upon the existence, the work and the teachings of Jesus Christ.

We have studied about his deity, which is a study that excites us and comforts us. But a study of his humanity is equally important to a complete understand of Jesus Christ.

We must be reminded here that a true knowledge of Jesus Christ, whether it be his deity or his humanity, must be obtained by the Spirit of God himself. A person may know him theoretically and theologically by a simple study of the scriptures, but he cannot know Jesus Christ in the true sense unless he is born again by God= s grace.

Lu 10:22 All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and [he] to whom the Son will reveal [him].

  1. THE HUMANITY OF JESUS CHRIST WAS UNIQUE
    1. Php 2:6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
      1. The A form of God@ in verse six refers to Christ= s humanity;
      2. A equal with God@ in verse six refers to his deity.
    2. His humanity was produced neither by natural generation (as is ours), nor by special creation, as was Adam= s. The humanity of Christ was, under the immediate agency of the Holy Spirit, supernaturally "conceived" (Isa. 7:14) of the virgin. It was "prepared" of God (Heb. 10:5); yet "made of a woman" (Gal. 4:4.).
      1. His birth was by the Holy Spirit -- Isa 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. B Mt 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
      2. His body was prepared of God B Heb 10:5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:
      3. He was made of a woman, not of a woman and man B Ga 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
    3. At his birth Jesus assumed a human nature, not a human person.
      1. When any human being is born, he becomes a human person, subsisting in himself. He is not a part of anyone else.
      2. When Jesus was born, he existed in a body which was prepared for him. Read agin Heb. 10:5, the last part, but a body hast thou prepared me. The pronoun A me@ in this verse indicates that Jesus had a nature from heaven: me; and upon birth took on the nature of humanity: a body. The ME is the divine nature, THE BODY is the human nature.
  2. THE HUMANITY OF JESUS CHRIST WAS REAL
    1. Heb 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
    2. ... 17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto [his] brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things [pertaining] to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.
    3. Jesus Christ did not bring his human nature from heaven, but it was acquired from his mother, Mary.
    4. In this human nature, Jesus acquired the same limitations, feelings, emotions, etc.; so the only difference between him and his brethren is that he had no sin.
    5. Jesus Christ was not God brought low enough to be human; he was not a man who was brought so high that he became God. His nature was unique in that he was the God-man: 100% God; 100% man.
    6. He was born an average human being, even a lowly and poor human being. He was not born in royalty. In ancient times, those born in the royal halls were wrapped in purple garments and were thought by the common people to be a superior race. Jesus was born and wrapped in swaddling clothes to manifest his true humanity.
    7. Jesus was so human that he worked in sweat of his face; he sat on the well because he was weary of travel; he had a need to take rest for his body in sleep; he hungered and thirsted as a human being; he died a human death as he gave his life a ransom for many. His humanity is real.
    8. Heb 2:10 For it became him, for whom [are] all things, and by whom [are] all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. 11 For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified [are] all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, In this he is our Kinsman-Redeemer.
  3. THE HUMANITY OF JESUS CHRIST WAS HOLY
    1. His humanity was holy, because it came from the Holy Spirit.
      1. Matt. 1:20 . . . for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost
      2. In Luke 1:35 he is called A that holy thing.@
    2. His humanity was holy, because his conception was miraculous
      1. Isa 64:6 But we are all as an unclean [thing], and all our righteousnesses [are] as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. Jesus is not like that. The scriptures never attribute to Jesus the same inheritance of sin that we have from our father, Adam. Jesus was not descended from Adam through the man but was born of a woman.
      2. Ps 51:5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. This is not true concerning Jesus. He was truly without sin in the flesh. It is said of Jesus in Heb 7:26 For such an high priest became us, [who is] holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;
      3. Joh 14:30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.
        1. Satan has something in every one of us, because we are directly related to Adam, and we are all affected by the sin of Adam and Eve.
        2. But Satan has nothing in Jesus. He is separate from sinners, and he is separate from Satan. That is why he could say, A Get thee behind me, Satan:@

  4. THE HUMANITY OF JESUS CHRIST IS AN EXAMPLE OF OUR OWN HUMANITY
    1. 1 Tim 2:5 For [there is] one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
    2. 1 Pet 2:21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
    3. 1 Pet 2:22 Who did no sin . . . , Neither should we do any sin in our lives.
    4. . . . neither was guile found in his mouth: Neither should any guile or deceit be found in our mouths.
    5. 1 Pet 2:23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed [himself] to him that judgeth righteously:
    6. Jesus was weary in body but not in well-doing. Ga 6:9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
    7. Ro 15:3 For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me. Neither should we live unto ourselves B 2 Cor 5:15 And [that] he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.
    8. Jesus always did those things which pleased the Father B Joh 8:29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.
    9. We also should do our works to be accepted of the Father B 2 Cor 5:9 Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.

Conclusion

The humanity of Jesus Christ includes more than we will be able to cover in this short message. We shall get into some of the other aspects of his humanity as we get further into the study of Christology.

But today we want to get just a taste of the idea that Jesus was the perfect man. He was a man in the sense that he had the same limitations and pains that we do. He was a man in the sense that he loved and hated as we do; he loved good and hated evil.

He is human in the sense that he became our Kinsman-Redeemer that he might take our sins upon himself and suffer, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us unto God.

He is human in the sense that he is our example of holiness that we should live unto God - Ga 2:19 For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.

He is human in the sense that he had human blood running through the veins, and that blood was shed and drained from his body that he might present it as a pure sacrifice for our sins, God accepting it as a perfect satisfaction for the payment of our sins.

Today you may be saved by that blood through faith in Jesus Christ, the God-man, by the grace of God.

Eph. 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
