IF HEAVEN WERE ONLY FREE
By Pastor Ronnie Wolfe - Feb. 8, 2007
For funeral of Stanley Lovins
How many works must I do to step in
Heaven’s place?
How good must I be to stare in Jesus’ face?
What miracles must I do to dwell in Canaan’s Land?
How much money must I pay upon that Sea to stand?
Oh, if it could cost just nothing to
dwell in that domain!
Oh, if I could just go there without the slightest gain!
Oh, if I could know for sure that there would be no fee!
Oh, I wish that I could think that Heaven could be free!
Then the thoughts of this frail mind went
back to that fair day
When on a Sunday I had heard a message come my way.
The message sounded loud and clear to this my list’ning ear,
The message plain and simple, my understanding clear.
The message from my preacher: Isaiah
fifty-five
With pondering I remembered, the meaning came alive.
"Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to [his feet]*,
And he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat."
Now I understand it; no shadow of a doubt.
Now I know what matters, what this is all about.
The sinner brings no money, nor works of his, you see.
Yes, heaven is a gift from God, and, yes sir, it is free!
*[his feet] was added for rhyme.
The Bible says
"to the waters."
