THE IMPECCABILITY OF CHRIST

Heb 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as [we are, yet] without sin.

Heb 9:28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

Introduction

We may not be able in this message today to answer the debate whether Christ was able not to sin or not able to sin, but we can determine with very good accuracy the fact that he did not sin.

In the two verse of text today that we have read, we notice the past tense in Heb. 4:15, that Jesus Awas in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.@ Then we see the future tense in Heb. 9:28 when it says, A shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.@

This tells us that from the time Jesus was born into the world until the time he returns from glory, he has had no sin, does not have any sin, and shall not have sin. This is important for the effectiveness of Christ work for us.

  1. JESUS WAS A MAN
    1. It is important that we realize that Jesus was a man. Yes, he was God, but he was man. Sometimes we try to make him a superman or an alien of some type, but he was a man.
    2. This is important, because Jesus could not have died in our place if he were not a man. He must be our kinsman redeemer, and in that he had to be blood related to us. He was related to humankind by blood.
    3. He had to be man in order that he might feel our infirmities and have compassion on us. He had to be our High Priest, and the high priest had to know the feelings of human infirmities.
    4. Being a man made Jesus susceptible to all kinds of temptations. He was tempted of the Devil in Matthew Chapter 4, and he was tempted in all point A like as we are,@ as we read in Heb. 9:28.
    5. But who says that he is without sin? The Bible says in Ro 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
    6. How do we know that Jesus is without sin? Who are his witnesses?

  2. THE WITNESS OF HIS FRIENDS
    1. 1Pe 1:19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
    2. 1Pe 2:22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
    3. Heb 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
    4. Ac 3:14 But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you;
    5. 1Jo 3:5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

  3. THE WITNESS OF HIS ENEMIES
    1. Judas, his enemy, said in Mt 27:4 . . . , I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What [is that] to us? see thou [to that].
    2. Mt 27:24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but [that] rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed [his] hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye [to it].
    3. Lu 23:41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.
    4. Lu 4:33 And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, 34 Saying, Let [us] alone; what have we to do with thee, [thou] Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.
    5. At the end of his life, they could find no false witneses that were believable enough. They searched and searched and finally found only two false witnesses. Mat. 26: 59 Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death; 60 But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses,

  4. THE WITNESS OF JESUS HIMSELF
    1. Joh 8:29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.

  5. THE WITNESS OF GOD THE FATHER
    1. Isa 53:9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither [was any] deceit in his mouth.

  6. THE WITNESS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
    1. Lu 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Conclusion

There may always be a difference of opinion as to whether could or could not sin, but there is no argument over the fact that JESUS DID NOT SIN.

However, all men are sinners (Rom. 3:23). Jesus is our example that we should not sin. 1 Jo 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

But how can we walk without sin? It is impossible. Notice 1Jo 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

Perfection is our goal Mt 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. But we cannot lie perfect. We must strive to be more like Christ every day.

If you without Christ in the world today, not only do you sin, but you are guilty before God of your sins. You must be regenerated by the Holy Spirit and place your trust in Jesus Christ as personal Savior. You must believe that he died for your sins, was buried and rose again for your justification. Then you will have righteousness imputed to you.

After we are saved, we must do our best to live without sin and to live to the glory of God. But we have a spotless Savior. The song says:

Guilty, vile and helpless we, Spotless Lamb of God was He; Full atonement! Can it be? Hallelujah, what a Saviour!
