The Offices of Jesus Christ

De 18:18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.

Introduction

In the Scriptures we find that Jesus has obtained and held three offices: that of prophet, that of priest, and that of king.

  1. THE OFFICE OF PROPHET
    1. De 18:18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.
    2. Joh 6:14 Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.
    3. Joh 7:40 Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.
    4. Acts 3:22 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. 23 And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people. 24 Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days.
    5. Mt 13:57 And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.
    6. Prophecies of Christ
      1. Mt 26:31 Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. Fulfilled in: Mt 26:55 In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me.
      2. Mt 26:34 Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.
      3. Joh 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, [there] ye may be also.

  2. THE OFFICE OF PRIEST
    1. The office of prophet was God= s representative to the people, and the office of priest is the people= s representative before God.
    2. The priests of the Old Testament were types of the Great Priest that would come, Jesus Christ:
      1. Heb 2:17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto [his] brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things [pertaining] to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.
      2. Heb 4:14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast [our] profession.
      3. Heb 7:11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need [was there] that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?
      4. Heb 7:17 For he testifieth, Thou [art] a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
      5. Heb 7:26 For such an high priest became us, [who is] holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;
      6. Heb 9:11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
    3. Jesus performed his priestly duty when he was on the cross being our substitute. He performed it when he went before to plead the case for our sins. He performed it when he returned in his resurrection and now, as he sits at the Father= s right hand, he is making intercession for us continually, which is the reason that we shall never die and the reason that we shall live in Heaven with him forever.

  3. THE OFFICE OF KING
    1. King David of old is the type of Jesus Christ in the most perfect way, but he ruled only Israel. Jesus Christ rules over the entire world
    2. Ps 2:8 Ask of me, and I shall give [thee] the heathen [for] thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth [for] thy possession. 9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter= s vessel.
    3. When Jesus returns, he will rule over the entire universe with all obstacles taken away. He deserve to reign as King of kings and Lord of lords B Re 19:16 And he hath on [his] vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

Conclusion

When Jesus speaks as prophet, we had better listen. When we read on one page of the Bible of a prophecy that he told his disciples would happen their lifetime, we had better expect that the prophecy would come to pass, because they all did.

When we read of a prophecy in the Bible that foretells something that will happen in the end of this age, we had better take heed. Even the promised that he gives to his children are precious to us as we know that he is the great Prophet that was to come.

When we think of a high priest of the Old Testament, remember that they could not accomplish the work that Jesus did on the cross when he represented all of his people before God and became their sacrifice for sin. He is the great high priest after the order of Melchisedec, not of Aaron. He represents us now in heaven as our intercessor and Lord, sitting at the right hand of God.

I am glad to have a high priest to which I can bring my problems and confess all my sins. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

But I am also glad that I have a king. He is Re 15:3 And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous [are] thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true [are] thy ways, thou King of saints.

He is King of kings and Lord of lords. He is my king. Is he your King? Is he your Priest? Is he your Prophet?
